Álvaro Silva Ribeiro is President of RELACRE (Portuguese Association of Accredited Laboratories), President of EUROLAB aisbl, the European Federation of National Associations of Measurement, Testing and Analytical Laboratories, Vice-President of UILI – International Union of Independent Laboratories, being a Research Officer at LNEC (National Laboratory for Civil Engineering) a Portuguese Government Laboratory.
He has held several management positions in LNEC, related to Metrology and Quality, namely, Head of the Metrological Quality Division, Applied Metrology Laboratory, Hydraulic Metrology Laboratory, Force Metrology Laboratory and Quality Manager for LNEC Laboratories accredited according with the ISO 17025 requirements.
He has participated in National and International research programs (as Referee, Advisor and Member). 17 journal papers and more than 50 international conference proceedings, 18 books and chapters in books published, participation in more than 70 national and international conferences and workshops, editor and reviewer of international conferences and member of editorial board of a Portuguese Measurement and Testing Journal. He is member of several IMEKO Technical Committees and represents EUROLAB in several international organizations (e.g., ILAC, EA, EURAMET),
Research experience is related with applying knowledge of metrology, physics, applied mathematics and numerical computation in several different civil engineering domains (dams, water supply, transportation, geotechnical, structural observation, materials properties and buildings) and in cooperation with other organizations, namely, with the Portuguese NMI in the fields of Temperature, flow, force and Ionising Radiation. Recent research is related with optical measurements of large infrastructures and dynamic measurements applied to civil engineering (aerodynamics, flow and seismic testing).
